How We Approach Life Insurance

At EWA, we don’t start with “what to buy.” We go deeper and ask, “What do you actually need?” and then design a plan that integrates with the rest of your wealth management strategy.

Needs-Based Analysis

We use the LIFE acronym: Liabilities, Income replacement, Final expenses, Education. Most families need to plan on coverage that is between eight to 12 times their income, but we calculate your exact number based on your mortgage, student loans, kids’ education goals, and retirement savings trajectory.

Term Insurance First

For 90% of households, affordable term insurance layered over 20 to 30 years is the right starting point. Think of term insurance like renting a house. You’re paying for protection during your highest-risk years while you’re still building wealth in other places that are first priority: 401(k)s, Roth IRAs, 529 plans, and so on.

Permanent Coverage When Appropriate

For high-income families who have maxed out 401(k)s, Roth IRAs, HSAs, and 529s, and still have surplus cash flow, whole life insurance can serve as a “safe money” asset. Properly structured policies with mutual carriers provide:
  • Permanent death benefit that never expires
  •  Cash value growth not tied to the stock or bond market
  •  Long-term care riders

Please note: We never lead with whole life insurance or other permanent structures of life insurance. We only consider it once other tax-efficient vehicles are full and the need for durable protection exists, as in cases of estate liquidity, tax diversification, or legacy funding.

How We’re Compensated

EWA is a fee-only Registered Investment Advisor (RIA). When insurance is part of your plan, it is implemented through our affiliate EWA Insurance LLC, which receives standard carrier-paid commissions. Our recommendations always start from a fiduciary plan at EWA LLC and only move to EWA Insurance LLC if implementation aligns with that plan.

We shop multiple carriers for the right fit, disclose all compensation, and keep product selection separate from your advisory fee.
